The teen singer was left fuming after Detroit radio present Mojo asked him if he was worried about One Direction's Harry Styles hangout out around his mum, given widespread reports of his penchant for older woman.
"I think you should worry about me around your mum, bro," Bieber snapped back.
But in an embarrassing blunder, the shocked host replied: "Justin, my mum's dead, so unfortunately it wouldn't work."
Mojo's question came after recent comments made by Bieber's girlfriend Selena Gomez.
Gomez told The Daily Mirror that both she and Bieber had "really hot mums". "Justin was like, 'Harry might have become one of my best buddies, but with his record, we need to keep him away from our mums'," she said.
But the interview with Mojo had been awkward long before Bieber made reference to the presenter's late mother.
Bieber was clearly upset when the host told the teen he thought his song Boyfriend sounded like it was sung by Justin Timberlake.
“Man, that’s crazy because our voices sound nothing alike," Bieber fumed. "Saying I sound like someone else is not really a compliment ... if you were to say 'I heard some Justin Timberlake-esque things', I would take that as a compliment."
